Beaches Craft Room kick-off

Hello Laydeez! This year the Northern Beaches Craft Room are meeting on the first Thursday of the month. First meet up is this Thursday, 2nd of February. The more the merrier so please come along and feel free to spread the word amongst your families and friends. Same venue, North Balgowlah community centre from 7 until 9pm.

Hornsby Craftroom

Well - a great night was had by all at the new Hornsby Craft Room meeting last night. There were 14 great ladies each with a project in tow, about 27 different types of supper to try and a million and one conversations had! There was plenty of inspiration across the tables with work being done on embroidery, knitting, tapestry, sewing, quilting and scrapbooking. Some were new to craft and itching to learn some skills, others have been crafting for years and many had experienced a crafting hiatus during the birth of babies. All in all, everyone felt welcomed and comfortable and we look forward to doing it all again next month.

Announcing Another New Location!

I'm excited to announce a brand new Craft Room group for 2011!

We're meeting in Hornsby on the first Tuesday evening of each month (beginning on the 1st March) at the Hornsby Heights Baptist Church Hall (110a Galston Road Hornsby Heights) from 7pm - 10pm.

We are a varied group enjoying crafts such as sewing, knitting, crochet, papercraft and cardmaking, embroidery, quilting, tapestry and more.

The Ladies from Glenmore Park got together on Wednesday night for our 1st crafting night and it was a huge success. Thanks to my sister Emily Roach and her amazing talent she created these beautiful Cup cakes made from the Craft Room Logo - Amazing!

They were so yummy too!

We had a great turn out Thanks ladies looking forward to next months get together.

All the Ladies had some great projects going.

I'm sure we are all going to learn a lot from each other!

Tea Cosy Competition

One of our new Inner West members is organising a Tea Cosy competition, and we thought some of you might be interested seeing as there's been a fair bit of needle clicking lately.

"Design and make your own ‘wild’ tea cosy
for the chance to win your share of prizes worth

All cosies will be displayed at the Leichhardt Public School
Spring Fete on 19th September 2010, with prizes awarded for the best
cosy in both the adult’s and children’s categories.

Inner West Craft Room

We had a great night last Wednesday at the Inner West Craft Room. A lovely
dinner with delicious dumplings, our own fully stocked private bar and a
huge selection of desserts including a TRIPLE chocolate pecan tart.

Of course there was craft too, and with the cold weather loads of yarn projects
including amazing knitted garments, a cute crocheted little girl jacket,
beautiful ripples, a big crocheted granny square blanket for a pet rabbit.
There was also a gorgeous embroidered picture drawn by someone's kids, and a
hand pieced quilt blocks.

Craft Room Sample Swap

Some of you may have seen, or participated in, previous sample swaps I have organised so now it's time for a Craft Room one.

General info about the swap:

Everyone will be divided into small groups, as the time frame is a bit short. At this stage I am thinking everyone will make 5 items (it may be less but definitely won't be more).
You need to make 5 of the same item but you can use different materials (ie. they don't have to be all the same colour etc. Check the links for examples of items received).
Swapping will take place at the Sunday Craft Room get together on the 27th June.
We will draw names and each group will break away and do their own swapping. If there is a double-up on items they will be split into different groups first.
If you are not coming on the 27th but want to participate you still can. You can either mail me your goodies and enclose a 3kg satchel for the return goodies OR you can give your items to someone who is coming and either include a satchel for return postage or get that person to bring them back to you.

You need to let me know by Friday 28th May if you want to participate - my email is over in the side bar.
Goods, obviously need to be finished by Sunday 27th, that gives you 4 weeks to get cracking.
We would love to have everyone involved so don't be shy, if you have any questions or are feeling nervous about participating please drop me an email so we can have a chat.

Flickr Swaps

I've just finished making my items for the Urban Home Goods Swap on Flickr. This was a blind swap so the recipient has no idea these are for her. {And she's unlikely to read this blog anyway, so I thought I would share with you}.

Both a pillow and a pincushion were listed among her desired items to receive, and her likes included:

bright fabrics, especially pink/red/orange
dark backgrounds (but not black)
Ta Dots, Denyse Schmidt, Sandi Henderson.
traditional quilt patterns with modern fabrics

The thing is, I'm not really sure if she wanted all those preferences in the one item. I could have gone overboard a touch. I guess I will never know though. It's not like she is going to tell me, is she?

Regardless, they are in the mail today, headed for the other side of the world, and fingers crossed they are well received.

What swaps do you participate in?

Do you struggle with having the confidence to come up with something that someone will like?

I do, and for that reason I'm not sure I enjoyed this swap as much as I should have. I would love to hear of your experiences!

Inspiration

I have almost finished a new cot quilt for my youngest daughter and now that the weather is turning cooler here in Sydney she is going to need it. I don't often use patterns for the quilts I make because I come across so many wonderful ideas on blogs and on flickr that there is no need to look further afield for inspiration. This stacked coin quilt is inspired by this photo on flickr and by this post by Indie Love. The Munki Munki fabrics are not released as yardage but are groovy pjs that some clever crafters have been cutting up to use in their own projects. I bought a few small pieces (pj sleeves, legs, front panels) from Sew Deerly Loved on Etsy and after adding a few small pieces of fabric leftover from other projects I was able to put this quilt top together. I am really pleased with how it has turned out... now I just need to figure out how to quilt it.

Hi All,

As some of you have discovered already, we have a shiny new header thanks to the talented Bee of Little Beehive.

I hope you like it! The blog was established to share our meet ups, inspiration and projects. Unfortunately, it's become more of a diary than a source of inspiration and community. I hope our new bright, happy home will encourage you all to jump on and share.

Think craft book/mag reviews, wip's and completed projects, tutorials, destashing or something to swap etc. Are you looking for an old issue of Ottobre or a pattern no longer in print? This is the forum to give a call out I'm sure someone will be able to help - even from a different group to yours. Cass, Bianca and I have a heap of other ideas as well, we hope to share them with you over the coming weeks/months.

So go forth and blog, if you need access or don't see your name on the sidebar, Don't hestiate to shoot me an email and I'll sort it out. Bee has also made us a new button, so feel free to grab the code from the sidebar for your own blog.

For those wondering, plans for the next Sunday craft day are underway for June, with the Inner West hosting. More details to come!

Another great night at CR, Northern Beaches. We welcomed Claire back for the first time this year, great to see craftroom won over hubbie's basketball!

Sophie was heming one of her girls dresses, while Claire was working on one of her cute rolling doggie's for the S&C show in Melbourne next week - good luck Claire! Can't wait to hear about it when you get back

Amelia flicked through a bunch of quilt and craft books, while I traced the the Oliver and S sailboat skirt that I hope to start this weekend.

Yes thanks to the craftroom a project was started and completed. I started knitting this cardi for my daughter the next day after my first craft room in May. I was inspired to knit and found a pattern and wool which was suitable for a relative beginner. I knitted a jumper as a teenager but never since and twenty odd years has passed. Its so good to have a project completed too! Thanks to Corrie, she did crochet the hat too which matched perfectly.

1st Sunday Craft Day

Today was our Sunday Craft Day but you might have well renamed it our Sunday Food Day as this was the spread...oh no wait, this is just the savoury table.

here is some of the sweet selection.....I'm sure I said in my email that this was not masterchef! And that absolutely scrumptious looking chocolate tart was made by this lovely lady...who I've now renamed that chocolate tart lady! Thank you everyone for the wonderful food you bought...you put my egg and mayo sandwiches to shame!

We had a ball, there were 18 of us in total and despite my best efforts I didn't even finish 2 rows of my ripple blanket as there was too much conversation to be involved in.

I know I'm not alone, I don't think this young lady touched her machine till after lunchtime. We finished up after 3pm but as you know time flies when you're having fun so I think a longer day is on the cards next time.

thank you to each and everyone of you clever crafty ladies who came along and made it the special day that it was.....we will definitely be doing it again....

but perhaps we'll bring less food next time or we'll have to call our husbands in to clear the lunch table for us when we're done.

winter craft retreat

- project to start or work on and all of your supplies. We have room for sewing machines, lots of floor space to cut etc etc. I think I'll do a bit of sewing and probably spend the last hour doing some crochet....you don't have to bring your sewing machine - just whatever you'd like to work on!

- something to share for lunch - a plate of sandwiches, cold quiche, frittata or something sweet. Let me know what you're bringing so I can make sure we've got a bit of everything. Don't go overboard....this is not masterchef!

- $10 to cover room hire and refreshments (coffee, tea, cold drinks, LOLLIES & CHOCOLATE and morning tea)! Any money left over will be saved for our next craft day!

- a small gift (fabric, trim, pattern, something you've made, something from your stash) to the value of $10 which we'll exchange! Don't go overboard!!!!

Wow, my very first post - ever!

I thought I'd post a photo of the scarf I finished off at The Craft Room last month.

A lovely green number, perfect for this Autumn cold snap we're having here in Sydney. The pattern is from The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller. I found it very easy to follow and the scarf was very quick to work up, I finished it in just two nights. I used a 100% wool yarn and it took less than a 100g ball to complete the scarf!
Just the kind of quick project I love for that absolute satisfaction you get from finishing a project.

First night fun

Well tonight the craft room had it's first meeting.

You would have thought we'd all known each other forever with the level of chatting and laughing going on! Rachel worked on lovely softies, Fran finished a gorgeous crochet scarf and Belinda worked on sweet hexagons while I helped Cass, Sophie, Fiona and Kelly learn crochet.....Cass was probably the most testing student (just kidding!!!!) while Sophie and Fiona were my quiet achievers who along with Kelly(and her to die for cookies) got started with a granny square and hopefully will continue their good work! And poor Amelia just made it in time to say hi and bye. We hope to see more of you, next time!!!!! Bianca and Ingrid we missed you and hope to see you soon.
